Newborn Care Specialist Track Workshops & Speakers

Support for the Breastfeeding Mother
Haleigh Almquist & Brittany Hunt

As Newborn Care Specialists, breastfeeding support and guidance falls under one of our big responsibilities. Breastfeeding support and education in the early days is vital for a new mom to encourage a lasting and healthy breastfeeding relationship with her child. In this workshop we will explore in depth breastfeeding information and how we, as NCS, can support a breastfeeding mother to help her navigate breastfeeding challenges. Additional topics cover breast and nipple issues, breastfeeding basics, sleep myths, latch, breast milk nutrition, physiological issues, and how to support a breastfeeding mother.

Haleigh is a Newborn Care Specialist and mommy of one to her son Axel. With over 10 years of childcare experience, Haleigh started her professional child care career in 2004 while working on her undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education at Texas Tech University. Since then Haleigh has cared for nearly 100 families and truly understand the delicacies it takes to care for someone in their first few months of life. Haleigh founded Hush Little Baby, LLC in January of 2011. After moving from Austin, TX and working in the DC area for 6 months, Haleigh realized so many parents were being sent less than adequate caregivers to care for their newborns. Haleigh holds newborn care to a high standard and so Hush Hush Little Baby was created, to provide families with professional, quality newborn care. Hush Hush Little Baby has served hundreds of families in the DC Metro, Austin, and Tampa Bay areas. In 2013, Haleigh joined Brittany Hunt to found the Newborn Care Training Academy. The academy was created out of a passion to educate others in the field of newborn care. Between Hush Little Baby and the Newborn Care Training Academy, Haleigh has a wealth of newborn knowledge and a great passion for what she does.

Brittany lives and works in the Washington, DC area with her husband and Golden Doodle puppy.  She has spent thousands of hours caring for infants and teaching new parent workshops. She studied psychology and early childhood education while in college and started working with newborns over 8 years before becoming a Newborn Care Specialist.  She has also worked with toddlers and young children as a professional nanny for multiple families. Brittany is very passionate about educating others in the proper care of newborns and education has long been an important part of the work she has done with new parents as a Newborn Care Specialist.  She is excited to share her knowledge with those seeking to become Newborn Care Specialists and to help guide them through the process.

Green is the New Black
Tonya Sakowicz

This workshop will address one of the hottest topics these days; going green. Providing practical, affordable solutions for NCS, nannies and families to implement within the home, vehicle, play and sleep environments to ensure as little toxic exposure as possible for expecting mothers, newborns and children. This workshop will be beneficial for both NCS and nannies.

What is “going green” and why does it matter
Health benefits
Brain development
Environmental Impact
Teaching children about their “part” in caring for our world

Tonya has spent the last 25 years dedicating her life to the health and welfare of new moms and babies, as well as older children.  As a professional, credentialed nanny, she has learned early-on that what children ate made a difference in their behavior and their overall ability to learn and play, but it was in the last 10 years that she really began to focus on working with new moms and newborns, helping them get off to the best start possible.  And in 2004, when she became pregnant with her first child, she really began to focus more on what she was putting into, on, and around her body.   Subsequent difficulty getting and staying pregnant and finally another child in 2008 really made her begin to research this, and when the opportunity to become a Certified Eco-consultant, Greenproofer and Green Birth Educator came along, it was a natural fit and the idea for Baby Go Green was born!
