“Get the Behavior You Want… Without Being the Parent You Hate,” Dr. G’s Guide To Effective Parenting. By Deborah Gilboa, MDA book review by INA 2014 Nanny of the Year Sheri Lopez |
Dr. G has done it again, writing a must read book for parents and caregivers that want to be effective, not re-active when it comes to children’s behavior.
We all know that as special and important as children of all ages are, they can at times present challenges that push us to the ‘edge’. Without learning positive and effective ways to address those challenging moments, we risk a chance of ‘blowing our top’ and yelling, which we all know is not effective and in fact may do more harm than good.
One of the many reasons I enjoyed reading Dr. G’s book, which I highly recommend, is because she builds on the 3 “R’s”, Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. She not only provides positive and respectful steps you can take to address a child’s behavioral issues no matte their age, and also reminds parents and caregivers that it is our responsibility to teach in a loving manner what is and is not acceptable.
Dr. G not only presents helpful and useful information that addresses traits that seem to be lacking in some children these days, such as manners, politeness, being a good guest or host and how to teach children to respect privacy and boundaries. She also shares ways to teach children to learn personal responsibility; which includes, getting dressed, learning to do laundry, help out around the house, clean up after themselves, chores, homework and how to handle money, save and give. Setting children up for success as they get older is part of our job as parents and caregivers; it’s a team effort.
Dr. G goes on to share in her must read book why allowing children to learn from their boredom, their mistakes and failures can actually build a child’s confidence by allowing children to learn from life’s lessons and consequences. And how to say “NO” and why it’s important.
With children a BIG part of my life, as a Career Nanny of 33 years, a mother to grown children and a ‘Grammy’ to 4 Grandkids, I can state without a doubt this book can make a difference in your life and the lives of the children in your care and is a must read for any parent or caregiver and one I wish I had around years ago! Thank you Dr. G for once again providing a sound, positive and insightful book!
