How Do You Transition from Nanny to NCS?

INA Blog How Do You Transition from Nanny to NCS 1By A Perfect Fit Nanny Agency

So you’ve worked as a nanny and now you’re interested in continuing your professional childcare experience by becoming a newborn care specialist (NCS). This is a wonderful and rewarding specialty field within the childcare industry, and we will briefly go into what this transition will require.

Experience With Newborns

The number one aspect that sets a NCS apart from a nanny is their increased experience with younger infants and newborns. Many parents are understandably less likely to leave childcare to their younger infants unless the professional has extensive experience working with newborns, specifically. Professional certifications, such as courses offered by the Red Cross for instance, lend a hand in training individuals on caring for newborns. Outside of increased certifications, making sure to take as many jobs as possible with younger infants to increase your experience with infants and newborns is incredibly helpful.

Working with Parents

Another characteristic that sets a NCS apart from other childcare professionals is they uniquely often have more facetime with parents as well as the child. While ideally, an experienced NCS should be able to handle many responsibilities without the parent, if you’re just starting off it’s okay to accept positions in which the parent is still nearby if it makes both the NCS and family more comfortable, and then slowly phase into more independent work with the child as they age. While nannies are often left to their own devices, it’s fairly common that a parent will still be nearby with a NCS, depending on how young the infant is and the comfort level of the parent. Every family is different in terms of what they need out of a NCS, so increased attention to their needs and style will set a budding NCS apart from the rest.
