You’ve Hired a Nanny: Tips on How to Cultivate a Strong Family Bond

INA Blog You've Hired a Nanny Tips on How to Cultivate a Strong Family Bond (1)Hiring a nanny to work in your home is a big decision. This person becomes such an important part of the daily innerworkings of your home, providing much-needed assistance with the kids. Having that extra hand can be such a relief for parents who are busy balancing their professional, social, and family lives. Because your nanny plays such a big role in your home, it’s important to cultivate a strong bond with them. Here are some tips on how to nurture that bond and develop a strong and long-lasting relationship.

Show your nanny that you trust them.
Having gone through the hiring process and performing all the necessary background checks and reference checks, you have likely hired a nanny that meets your expectations. You’ve hired your nanny because you trust them – their skillset, their experience, and their ability to love and nurture your kids while you’re away. Show your nanny that you trust them by avoiding micromanaging them or hovering. Give the nanny and children plenty of space throughout the day, invite the nanny’s opinions or suggestions, and respect their professional opinion when it comes to your kids and their wellbeing.

Focus on communication.
Just like any great relationship, a strong foundation of clear and respectful communication is key. Parents and nannies must learn to communicate and discuss all sorts of things – children’s behavior, health concerns, family or house rules, developmental milestones or education, schedules, and much more. From day one, it’s important to keep communication at the forefront of your working relationship with your nanny. Keeping them in the loop reduces confusion and frustration, and shows that you respect their time and expertise, too. Monthly or weekly check-ins are a great way to keep the lines of communication open. If there are misunderstandings or other concerns, this is a good time to discuss those before they turn into larger problems. It’s also a good time to tell your nanny what a great job they are doing.

Treat your nanny as a professional.
Professional nannies put a lot of time, energy, and effort into their roles as childcare providers. Many of them undergo education, certifications, and other training that solidifies their expertise in their job. They are more than just a casual babysitter – they are professionals that should be treated well. As professionals, you should be open to listening to their suggestions and ideas. You should also treat their role with you professionally: paying them a fair wage, on time, and on-the-books. Your nanny is an employee in your home and paying them with proper taxes and Social Security benefits withheld is important to them.

Show appreciation on a regular basis.
Your nanny has a big job and recognizing their dedication to your home and your family is a great way to build a strong bond. Are you impressed by your nanny going above and beyond? Maybe they are especially gifted in connecting with your kids and being present in the moment. If you see your nanny working hard, let them know that you see them. Tell them thank you. Give them an unexpected extra day off occasionally. Provide bonuses throughout the year. Find out their favorite snack foods and have them on hand when they’re working in your home. Acknowledge their birthday or holidays with a card and a small gift. All of these things show that you appreciate them – and that goes a long way.

Respect their boundaries.
Whether it’s paying them on time, respecting their privacy, not adding additional tasks or chores into their job description without discussion, or relieving them of their duties at the right time, it’s critical to respect your employee’s boundaries. A respected nanny is one who will give their best for the long-term.

For many people, nannies become a treasured part of their family. Taking care of them and showing how much you appreciate their work is the best way to cultivate a strong bond that stands the test of time.
